Spatial Projects Review List

Let’s take a look at a few maps and explore what they do:

Pick a couple projects from the list below (feel free to work in pairs!) and consider the following prompts (inspired by Lincoln Mullen).

Drucker’s typology of mapping research:

Show something on a map Analyze an aspect of spatial experience Narrate an event using a map to present the argument
Interpret a map as a historical and critical form Create a map based from place-based references Employ coordinate data or use the map as a picture

Questions to ask yourself as you choose and examine a project:

(1) What is the purpose of making these maps? (2) Which elements of Drucker’s typology are used? (3) What kind of information is attached to location? (geocoding: adding information –geodata and metadata–to location) (4) does the project tell you about who was involved? or the number of people / the labor involved? (5) how was the data for the project sourced? (6) is the data of the project accessible for reuse? (7) what you do take away?
